Bret Hart recently shared his thoughts in an interview, voicing unwavering support for CM Punk ahead of his clash with Gunther at WWE SummerSlam. Hart not only applauded Punk’s capabilities but also expressed his discontent regarding Gunther’s wrestling approach.
Hart, known as one of the finest technical wrestlers, categorized Punk as the best among contemporary talents in wrestling during a media discussion on present-day WWE. He mentioned,
“I’m a forever Rey Mysterio fan. I love watching Rey even now, especially as he gets older. But I’m also a big fan of Roman Reigns, and I think if I had to answer the question, I’d say CM Punk.”
Punk faced a challenging bout against Gunther that weekend, resulting in his first WWE title in over a decade. However, he quickly found himself cashed in on by Seth Rollins within moments after his triumph.
Meanwhile, despite Gunther’s esteemed reputation as a top performer, Hart’s views diverged, criticizing the excessive physicality in Gunther’s wrestling style. He articulated his perspective with a damning condemnation:
“The best wrestling has to pretend to be real… I have no respect for guys who hurt each other all the time. It’s just lazy, shit wrestling. When you’re hurting somebody for real, you’re unprofessional.”
At 68, Hart continues to engage in conversations around wrestling’s art, firmly critiquing practices he perceives as detrimental to the sport.
