Teddy Bridgewater Speaks Out on His High School Coaching Suspension: 'I Aimed to Protect My Players'

Teddy Bridgewater addresses his suspension for providing financial benefits to high school football players, emphasizing his intentions to safeguard them.

Teddy Bridgewater, who has recently returned to the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, addressed the suspension he faced from coaching high school football in Florida. This suspension resulted from his provision of what were considered inappropriate benefits to his players, including payments for Uber rides, meals, and recovery services.

Bridgewater, who was coaching at Miami Northwestern, explained his actions, stating he aimed to support players from economically disadvantaged backgrounds living in a challenging environment. In his words:

“Miami Northwestern is in a tough neighborhood. Things can happen when kids are walking home. I was just trying to protect them.”

Bridgewater highlighted his role as a protector, saying:

“I’m protective, and I’m a father first before anything. And when I decided to coach, those players became my sons. And I wanted to make sure that I just protected them in the best way that I can.”

He reflected on the emotional toll that the suspension took on him, particularly considering the close bonds he formed with his players at Miami Northwestern, where he had first experienced success in football. Bridgewater hopes to inspire his players by demonstrating that, despite obstacles, success is attainable as he continues his NFL career.
