Former Miami Heat Security Personnel Charged Over Sale of Stolen Jerseys Worth Millions
A former security officer for the Miami Heat has been charged with trafficking stolen jerseys and memorabilia valued at roughly $2 million.
A former Miami Heat security officer, Marcos Perez, aged 62, faces charges for allegedly selling stolen jerseys and memorabilia valued at $2 million. On Tuesday, he made his first court appearance for charges including transporting stolen goods across state lines.
Law enforcement, collaborating with the FBI from the Southern District of Florida, executed a search warrant at Perez’s Miami residence on April 3, recovering around 300 stolen game-worn jerseys and other high-value items. The Miami Heat confirmed that these items had been taken from their property.
According to court documents, Perez sold the stolen memorabilia to online dealers. Over three years, he is accused of selling more than 100 items for about $2 million, sometimes at significantly lower prices. Notably, he sold a Miami Heat jersey worn by LeBron James during the NBA Finals for around $100,000; that jersey later fetched $3.7 million at a Sotheby’s auction.
Having retired as a 25-year veteran from the Miami Police Department, Perez worked with the Miami Heat from 2016 to 2021 and as an NBA security official from 2022 to 2025. He was responsible for day-of-game security at the Kaseya Center and had access to an equipment room where valuable memorabilia was stored for future display in a team museum. The documents indicate that he stole over 400 game-worn jerseys and additional items from this secured area.
