Sepp Straka has withdrawn from the 2025 BMW Championship due to a private family matter, as announced by the PGA Tour on Monday. Straka, who was ranked No. 5 in the season-long standings for the FedEx Cup, misses this significant opportunity, but he remains expected to qualify for the upcoming Tour Championship where the top 30 golfers will compete in the postseason finale.
“For personal reasons, Sepp is unable to play this week,” said his manager Buter Melnyk. “He intends to compete at the Tour Championship but requests privacy at this time as he attends to a family matter at home.”
Entering the postseason at No. 3 in the FedEx Cup standings, Straka fell to fifth after Justin Rose and J.J. Spaun achieved top-two finishes at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. With a T17 finish recently, he continued to have a strong campaign in 2025, enhancing his reputation in professional golf.
Straka is among six golfers with multiple wins on the PGA Tour this season, alongside notable players such as Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy. Early victories this year included wins at The American Express in January and the Truist Championship, one of the season’s signature events.
Alongside his two victories, he secured top-10 finishes in several major tournaments, including the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Straka has participated in the BMW Championship for three consecutive seasons, achieving his best finish of T13 in 2024. Despite his absence this year, he is guaranteed a spot in the upcoming Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club, aiming to improve on his previous best FedEx Cup finish of T7 in 2022.
With Straka’s withdrawal, the field for the BMW Championship at Caves Valley is now reduced to 49 players. Rory McIlroy is set to return after skipping the previous championship.
