Jonathan Kuminga May Choose Qualifying Offer in Restricted Free Agency

Amid a quiet NBA offseason, Jonathan Kuminga is considering opting for a qualifying offer rather than signing a two-year deal with the Warriors.

The NBA offseason is relatively quiet, yet there are significant matters concerning restricted free agents that remain unresolved. Notably, Jonathan Kuminga has drawn attention in this category as he weighs the implications of the two-year, $45 million contract offered by the Warriors against the potential of signing a qualifying offer of $7.9 million.

Kuminga and Qualifying Offer

Kuminga has consistently resisted signing the Warriors’ offer, favoring instead a deal that reflects an Average Annual Value (AAV) close to $30 million. His role within Steve Kerr’s framework has not been stable, prompting concerns regarding a prospective all-star trajectory alongside teammates like Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green.

As this saga unfolds, Kuminga appears increasingly inclined to endorse the qualifying offer, indicating he may opt for the chance to become an unrestricted free agent next season, as reported by ESPN’s Anthony Slater.

Trade Dynamics

The Warriors are eager to avoid this path, preferring to trade Kuminga for assets rather than losing him to free agency for nothing. Complicating matters, no team has shown willingness to meet Golden State’s demands in return for Kuminga, which includes a minimum of an unprotected first-round draft pick. The Warriors rejected a proposal from the Kings involving Malik Monk and a protected first-round pick for Kuminga.

Other teams, including the Suns, who have also expressed interest in a sign-and-trade, face limitations as they lack first-round picks until 2032. The Bulls have emerged as a possible trade collaborator due to their interest in Josh Giddey, but the Bulls have made it clear they are reluctant to trade him.

Overall, the situation remains stagnant, with no clear resolution in sight.

Giddey’s Situation

Josh Giddey finds himself in a similar scenario with the Bulls, demanding an annual salary in the $30 million range, while the Bulls have expressed unwillingness to meet that figure.

This backdrop leaves both Kuminga and Giddey in precarious positions heading into the next season and beyond.
