Alexi Lalas Addresses Christian Pulisic and Tim Weah's Comments: 'I Don't Identify as Evil'

In a recent commentary, Alexi Lalas responds to criticism from soccer players Christian Pulisic and Tim Weah regarding former players-turned-pundits.

We are called evil, yet you say you respect us? That contradiction doesn’t hold.

On the recent episode of the “Pulisic” series on Paramount+, Christian Pulisic and Tim Weah, along with Christian’s father, Mark Pulisic, discussed critiques from former USMNT players turned commentators.

Christian expressed, “The most frustrating remark is when pundits claim: ‘They lacked the drive. In our time, we would give it our all.’”

And Tim added, “I believe these commentators are merely seeking attention. Some of them are genuinely malevolent because, having been players themselves, they understand the pain of criticism. Yet they are the same individuals who will greet you kindly later on.”

Mark elaborated: “These commentators crave social media engagement, hoping people subscribe to their channels or podcasts. They should reflect on their performances with the national team before making negative comments.”

Picking apart these comments, I am not evil. Criticism isn’t born from malevolent intent. If anyone were malevolent, I wouldn’t hold them in high regard.

Additionally, Landon Donovan was featured in the “Pulisic” clip, and he is a legendary member of the USMNT. He was part of the best U.S. World Cup team ever—a single handball away from reaching the semifinals in 2002—and has a statue outside LA Galaxy’s stadium.

Lastly, it is best not to bring your father into arguments. While Mark Pulisic has been influential in Christian’s life, it’s unconventional to have a parent argue on your behalf. If you’re upset with me or Landon, speak up directly, as you have a powerful platform.

In under a year, both Christian Pulisic and the USMNT will be center stage at the world’s most significant sporting event. Support is strong, so it’s vital to build goodwill with an American audience eager to rally behind you. Your true legacy will be forged on the pitch—this is where the real battle lies, and it will be showcased next summer at the World Cup.
