In a significant announcement, Gianluigi Donnarumma, the star goalkeeper for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), revealed his intention to leave the club. This comes after being omitted from the squad for the upcoming UEFA Super Cup against Tottenham.
Earlier on Tuesday, PSG’s lineup included Lucas Chevalier, who recently transferred from Lille for over 40 million euros, and backup goalkeepers Matvei Safonov and Renato Marin. Donnarumma’s exclusion is considered the tipping point leading to his departure.
The 26-year-old Italian international expressed his sadness on social media, stating:
“Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the team’s success. I am disappointed and disheartened.”

Donnarumma hopes for a farewell to fans at the Parc des Princes, recalling the cherished memories he had while playing for the team. He added:
“I hope to have the opportunity to look the fans in the eyes one more time and say goodbye as it should be done.”

Luis Enrique, the coach, defended his decision to recruit Chevalier, stating that it was a tough choice, emphasizing Donnarumma’s exceptional skills both on and off the field. The decision to favor Chevalier might stem from a preference for better distribution skills from the back, a noted area of improvement for Donnarumma.
Despite being recognized as one of Europe’s top goalkeepers last season, contributing significantly to PSG’s Champions League triumph, Donnarumma has opted not to renew his contract with just one year remaining. Transitioning to the Premier League, particularly to Manchester City or being pursued by Manchester United, seems likely.
This situation mirrors that of Kylian Mbappe, who similarly navigated contract negotiations and ultimately left for Real Madrid on a free transfer two seasons back.
As Marquinhos, PSG’s captain, stated,
“If he has to go, then we thank him from the bottom of our hearts. He has been a great leader all these years. Seeing Donnarumma leave would upset me.”

PSG’s league campaign is set to commence against Nantes on August 17.
