The New York Jets made two trades on Wednesday to enhance their defensive line. They first announced a deal with the Cleveland Browns to bring in Jowon Briggs along with a 2026 seventh-round pick in exchange for a sixth-round pick in 2026. Additionally, according to Adam Schefter from ESPN, they are finalizing another trade to acquire Harrison Phillips from the Minnesota Vikings, giving up two sixth-round picks (one in 2026 and one in 2027) in the process.
Performance and Expectations
Phillips, 29, is recognized as the standout of the two signings, boasting a seven-year career during which he started all 17 games for the Vikings over the last three seasons. In these years, he amassed 207 tackles, 6.5 sacks, and multiple pivotal plays that underscored his defensive prowess. His peak performance came in 2023, achieving a career-best 92 tackles.
Briggs, at just 23 years old, has limited experience in the league, having played six games last year for the Browns where his stats included 13 tackles and a fumble recovery.
The Jets’ aggressive trades demonstrate their dedication to strengthening their defensive lineup, especially with Quinnen Williams leading a group that faced challenges last season against the run. With questions about their reserve options, acquiring Phillips suggests New York’s intent to improve their defensive impact. Phillips is positioned to start alongside Williams, leveraging his successful history in Minnesota, while Briggs is anticipated to serve as a depth resource as he continues to develop his skills.
