Red Sox Demote Veteran Pitcher Walker Buehler to Bullpen as Season Approaches Climax

In a significant shift, the Boston Red Sox have decided to move right-hander Walker Buehler from the starting rotation to the bullpen, as reported by manager Alex Cora.

The Boston Red Sox are making a strategic change by shifting right-handed pitcher Walker Buehler to the bullpen, as confirmed by manager Alex Cora earlier today. This decision comes just hours before their match against the New York Yankees.

Buehler, who has amassed a 5.40 ERA this season, will be replaced in the starting lineup, although the Red Sox have yet to announce his successor. With his next turn to pitch coming up on Monday, they have some time to finalize their selection. A possible option is Kyle Harrison, acquired in a trade involving Rafael Devers, who will be eligible to pitch after five days of rest, marking a potential debut.

Despite a recent recovery period where he had a 3.77 ERA in eight starts, Buehler’s overall performance remains below standard. He signed a one-year contract worth $21 million with a mutual option for 2026. Throughout 22 games, he has tallied a 1.52 strikeout-to-walk ratio, struggling to reclaim his past effectiveness as a Cy Young Award contender.

The Red Sox currently hold a 69-59 record, placing them half a game behind the Yankees for the top wildcard slot and five games behind in the AL East.
