Malik Beasley Cleared of Federal Gambling Inquiry, Can Pursue NBA Deals
Malik Beasley's legal troubles have ended as he is no longer part of a federal gambling investigation, paving the way for his return to the NBA.
Malik Beasley can now start his free agency journey, as he is no longer a subject of a federal gambling investigation, as confirmed by his lawyers, Steve Haney and Mike Schachter. As stated in a report to ESPN, this development allows Beasley to actively seek an NBA team to sign with.
Initially, Beasley was offered a three-year, $42 million contract by the Detroit Pistons, but this offer was rescinded shortly before free agency started following reports of the investigation, leading to a lack of interest from other teams.
The investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York revolved around allegations involving gambling on league games. This inquiry into Beasley coincided with earlier issues concerning Jontay Porter, who faced consequences over similar gambling-related matters. The investigation began when betting irregularities related to Beasley were identified by a sportsbook.
Despite being under scrutiny for nearly two months, Beasley faced no formal charges and was merely considered a person of interest, which hindered movement in his career until the investigation concluded.
Haney expressed his frustration over the situation, stating, “It’s just flat-out un-American to be deprived of the right to work based on a mere allegation. I don’t care if you are a pro basketball player or a plumber. That’s not the presumption of innocence and that’s unconstitutional.”
Moreover, the New York Knicks are reportedly evaluating Beasley as a potential signing. However, they can currently only provide a veteran minimum offer. It remains uncertain how much he might sign for this late in the off-season, especially since many teams have already set their rosters.
Beasley had a one-year contract with the Pistons last season worth $6 million, during which time he set a franchise record by making 319 three-pointers and played a crucial role in leading the Pistons to their first playoff appearance since 2019, breaking a 15-game playoff loss streak against the New York Knicks.
