After enduring two seasons riddled with setbacks, Gio Reyna has taken a critical step in his career by transferring from Borussia Dortmund to Borussia Monchengladbach. This new chapter promises a fresh beginning as he signs a contract extending until summer 2028.
At just 22, Reyna, who made his debut at Dortmund when he was only 17, struggled to maintain a consistent spot in the team under various coaches. He even spent time on loan at Nottingham Forest but couldn’t regain his previous form. With less than a year remaining until the World Cup, leaving Dortmund now seems opportune.

While Monchengladbach may not be competing in the Champions League this season, they have a history of European competition and view Reyna as a valuable addition to help them return there. Notably, he will be reunited with his close friend, Joe Scally, who already plays for Gladbach after joining from New York City FC.
Having been part of the USMNT during the 2022 World Cup, both players now share the goal of securing spots in the squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup.
After a less impactful stay with Dortmund during their Club World Cup campaign, where Reyna played just 12 minutes across the tournament, this transfer could provide the opportunities he needs to shine. Monchengladbach, having finished 10th in the Bundesliga last season, offers him the platform to establish his role.
Competition Details
Midfielder Kevin Stoger will directly compete with Reyna in the central midfield position, although he only managed three goals and four assists last season. With Alassane Plea moving on to PSV, there is a clear path for Reyna to make his mark in midfield.
While competition exists on the wings from Robin Hack and Franck Honorat, Reyna’s inherent talent gives him a strong chance to become a regular starter if he can stay injury-free.
This transfer to Gladbach, instead of a potential move to Parma in Serie A, brings a sense of familiarity for Reyna, especially with his friend alongside him during this crucial time. Showing his capabilities and taking full advantage of this opportunity is now his priority.
