Kevin Stefanski Explains Shedeur Sanders' Bench Decision and the Choice of Tyler Huntley

Cleveland's coach discusses the surprising benching of quarterback Shedeur Sanders during the preseason finale against the Rams.

During the final preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams, Coach Kevin Stefanski made a surprising decision to bench quarterback Shedeur Sanders late in the fourth quarter. Instead, he opted for Tyler Huntley to lead the team on a critical drive, which ultimately secured a win for the Cleveland Browns.

Sanders, who played the entire second half, noted his confusion at being sidelined during a pivotal moment. He expressed his desire to be part of the action, stating, “I didn’t know I was out,” following the game. Despite his initial emotions, he acknowledged the competitive nature of the sport.

“It’s a situation every quarterback dreams of, and when you’re not in it, you’re just trying to understand the decision,” he reflected.

Flacco, who is set to be the starting quarterback for Week 1, had an impressive performance in the game, completing 9 of 10 passes for 71 yards and a touchdown. Meanwhile, the upcoming NFL roster cuts present a challenging situation for the Browns as they must decide between Sanders and offseason addition Kenny Pickett, who has been hampered by an injury.
