Desmond Watson, the heaviest player in NFL history at 449 pounds, has been waived by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers according to a report from Fox Sports’ Greg Auman. Watson spent training camp on the non-football injury list while trying to shed weight.
The Buccaneers originally signed Watson out of Florida, where he played at 464 pounds in college. Although he was undrafted, Tampa Bay took a chance on the 6-foot-4 defensive tackle, hoping he could become a significant player in their lineup.
Earlier in training camp, Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles discussed the reasoning behind placing Watson on the NFI list, stating, “It’s just about trying to get him better, to be a healthier player and getting him on the field a little more. He’s working at it, and we’re working with him—that’s all you can ask right now.”
Watson clarified that he desires to be recognized for his football skills rather than just his weight. “I feel like my name is etched in history, of course, as the official heaviest player in the NFL, or whatnot; it’s a good story,” he said. However, he emphasized, “I want to be known as a good football player.”
As he does not appear to be heading to Tampa’s practice squad at this time, Watson now seeks opportunities with other teams as cuts continue across the league. Should he find a new team, he may still become the heaviest player to have participated in an NFL game.
