In a surprising turn of events, Diontae Johnson, formerly a Pro Bowl receiver, has been released by the Cleveland Browns. Following a series of underwhelming performances and a quest to reignite his career in Cleveland, Johnson, who turned 29 this year, has shifted between four teams since his trade from the Pittsburgh Steelers in March 2024.
Johnson’s recent season was underwhelming, recording only 33 receptions for 375 yards and three touchdowns. In April, he signed a one-year contract worth $1.7 million with the Browns, the veteran minimum, in hopes of a fresh start.
Johnson remarked earlier this year:
“I don’t like to speak on a lot of stuff. Everybody’s going to have their opinions… But last year is last year. I’m trying to turn and change that narrative and move the right way and just keep going.”
His journey began in Pittsburgh, where he was selected in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, stepping into a role that sought to fill the gap left by Antonio Brown after his departure to the Las Vegas Raiders. Johnson’s rookie season was impressive, leading the Steelers in receiving yards and continuing to excel in the following years, including a standout year in 2021 that earned him a trip to the Pro Bowl.
Now, with his release from the Browns, Johnson finds himself looking for another opportunity in the NFL, aiming to overcome the adversity that has defined his journey lately.
