St. Louis Cardinals catcher Willson Contreras has received a six-game suspension alongside a fine for actions during a recent game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The incident occurred at Busch Stadium, where Contreras was ejected after expressing discontent with a called strike.
Contreras accidentally struck hitting coach Brant Brown with his bat after being thrown out from the game. He was protesting against home-plate umpire Derek Thomas during the seventh inning. The ejection was caused by allegedly using ‘vulgar’ language and that he made contact with an umpire, although he disputed the latter claim, insisting he was seeking consistent strike-zone calls.
His frustration mounted after a controversial call from umpire Yohan Ramírez, which was mathematically supported as a strike by a probability analysis.
Contreras currently holds a batting average of .261 with 19 home runs in the season. Notably, he is the second player to face scrutiny for similar actions recently, as Victor Robles of the Seattle Mariners also faced a suspension for throwing a bat during a rehab game.
