Alabama's Tim Keenan III to Miss Season Opener Against Florida State After Ankle Surgery
Alabama's leading defensive player is set for tightrope surgery following an injury in practice.
Alabama defensive lineman Tim Keenan III is set to have tightrope surgery to treat a high ankle sprain he suffered during practice, as reported by several sources. He is expected to miss several games yet aims to return later in the season, according to ESPN’s Chris Low. Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer mentioned during last Wednesday’s SEC conference call that Keenan will likely “probably not” participate fully in the opening week against Florida State, though he didn’t specify the injury’s severity.
Keenan enters the 2025 season regarded as one of the top defensive players in college football. As a third-year starter, he had a standout previous year, culminating in 40 tackles, eight tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks.
“We’re getting a lot of it kind of figured out,” DeBoer stated. “After practicing, honestly, gathered information. Did a little in the moment I’m in right now just trying to understand exactly where it’s at. So our staff is unbelievable. They have done some pretty impressive things on getting guys back and so waiting for the update on that. I don’t know if I can even give you a percentage and be confident on that. We’ll see, but it is a lower-body injury.”
Prior to the season opener, Alabama has also faced injuries. Starting RB Jam Miller is currently sidelined with a collarbone injury and is expected to return for the SEC opener against Georgia on September 27. Additionally, offensive lineman Jaeden Roberts is questionable for Saturday as he follows concussion protocol.
In Keenan’s absence, James Smith is projected to start as the top defensive tackle. He had featured in all 13 games last season, providing valuable support to Keenan with 20 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, and one sack. Alongside him, redshirt freshman Jeremiah Beaman and backup Edric Hill may see increased playing time.
Alabama is known for its pioneering of tightrope surgeries, using it to expedite recovery for athletes with ankle injuries. Team doctor Norman Waldrop has been leading in this field, employing flexible implants instead of screws to stabilize the ankle, allowing for natural movement and faster recovery.
Several notable players from Alabama underwent tightrope surgeries during its rise, including Outland Trophy winner Cam Robinson in 2014, along with prominent quarterbacks Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa, with the surgery typically enabling players to return in less than a month.
