With the 53-man roster cut down complete, the Cleveland Browns have started to form their practice squad. General manager Andrew Barry has chosen to sign Malachi Corley, previously a third-round pick from the New York Jets, to their practice squad, as reported by NFL Media.
The self-styled “YAC King” (Yards After Catch King) was Aaron Rodgers’ favorite receiver in the 2024 NFL Draft. Coming from Western Kentucky, Corley had impressive stats, recording 101 receptions for 1,295 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2022, and 79 receptions for 984 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2023. However, his first NFL season did not live up to expectations.
In nine games, he only caught three passes for 16 yards and rushed for 26 yards on two attempts. A notable error was when he fumbled before scoring a touchdown during a Halloween match against the Houston Texans.
Overall, Corley played 83 offensive snaps and eight special teams snaps. As noted by ESPN, Jets coaches criticized Corley’s route running and maturity. He now faces tough competition in a receivers room that includes Jerry Jeudy, Cedric Tillman, Jamari Thrash, and Isaiah Bond. This shift to Cleveland may be a vital opportunity for him.
