Manchester United Eliminated by Grimsby Town in Stunning Penalty Shootout

In a shocking League Cup exit, Manchester United fell to fourth-tier Grimsby Town after a penalty shootout.

The hits keep on coming for Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United, who clawed back from a 2-0 deficit on Wednesday but lost 12-11 in a penalty shootout to Grimsby Town, exiting the ELF Cup in the second round.

Grimsby struck first with the game’s opening goal in the 22nd minute, thanks to Charles Vernam. The hosts took advantage after a slow start from the visitors. At that point, United had 58.2% possession but both teams had three shots, showing Grimsby’s efficiency.

Things worsened for United eight minutes later when Tyrell Warren scored again for Grimsby from a corner. United goalkeeper Andre Onana misjudged the delivery, leaving an open net for Warren.

Amorim made three halftime changes and a more aggressive second half led to two late goals, tying the match. Bryan Mbeumo scored in the 75th minute, followed by a header from Harry Maguire in the 89th minute which sent the match to penalties.

Onana redeemed himself by saving a penalty early in the shootout, but Grimsby goalkeeper Christy Pym responded by saving Matheus Cunha’s kick. The shootout extended to sudden death, with both goalkeepers even stepping up to take their shots.

In the end, Mbeumo hit the crossbar during the 13th round, ensuring Grimsby’s advancement after a 12-11 shootout victory.

With this result, United has begun the season winless, with one loss and two draws, extending Amorim’s rough spell since taking charge in November.
