Gio Reyna has made the switch from Borussia Dortmund to Borussia Monchengladbach, stepping into a new phase of his career at just 22 years old. Reyna’s journey is short but significant; just over an hour from Dortmund to Gladbach’s BORUSSIA-PARK brings him a much-needed change of scenery. His new opportunity lies in the quest for consistent playing time, which he believes is vital for both his personal growth and national team aspirations.
Despite being absent from the latest squad selection by coach Mauricio Pochettino for the September friendlies against South Korea and Japan, Reyna remains optimistic. In a recent interview, he shared thoughts about his exclusion, emphasizing: “I can’t be mad about it. Of course, I want to be back in, [the national team] but I know that’s only possible with playing time and performing well. So, that’s how it is, that’s how it should be.”
As he transitions to Gladbach, Reyna recognizes the importance of finding a club that not only meets his competitive needs but also feels right for him personally. Having a connection with teammate Joe Scally, who has shared a journey with him since their time in New York City FC’s academy, provides Reyna with both emotional support and an opportunity to contribute meaningfully in a midfield role that could bring much-needed creativity to the team.
Scally echoed these sentiments, stating: “I’ve played with Gio for so long, so I know all his skill sets on the field. I think we’ve been missing some creativity and some physical presence in the midfield and in that attacking role, so I think he can really help us with that.”
