EuroBasket 2025 kicked off on Wednesday, featuring 24 teams and numerous NBA stars competing for the title of men’s basketball champions of Europe. The event is taking place in Cyprus, Finland, Poland, and Latvia, with the knockout stage set to occur in Riga, Latvia in September. Defending champion Spain aims to retain their title after triumphing over France in the 2022 final.

Star players include Luka Dončić representing Slovenia, and Nikola Jokić heading the Serbian team, who are favorites to win. Giannis Antetokounmpo represents Greece again. Other participants include prominent NBA players like Kristaps Porziņģis from Latvia, Franz Wagner, who contributed to Germany’s bronze medal in 2022, and the promising French trio of Zaccharie Risacher, Alexandre Sarr, and Bilal Coulibaly. Notably, Victor Wembanyama will not participate this year due to an injury that curtailed his NBA season in February.

Tournament Format

The competition starts with a group stage consisting of four groups, each with six teams, competing in a round-robin format. Victorious teams earn two points while losing teams receive one. The four top teams from each group will advance to the knockout stage. Tiebreakers will come into play if teams end up with the same points, assessing head-to-head results, point differentials, and total points scored.
