College Football Rankings: Changes Loom for Ohio State and Florida State as Texas and Alabama Slip

As Week 1 concludes, significant shifts are anticipated in the college football rankings. Ohio State and Florida State are set to ascend, while Texas and Alabama face declines.

Week 1 of college football is nearly finished, but the rankings won’t update until all games conclude Monday night. With many results settled, projected changes for the AP Top 25 poll, due Tuesday, can be anticipated.

As we enter a regular rhythm, our weekly AP Top 25 projections – ‘Tomorrow’s Top 25 Today’ – will be published on CBS Sports every Saturday night. For Week 1, the update will initially come on Monday evening ahead of the Tuesday refresh. Yet, the discussions on ranking movements can be addressed already, given the significant results from Thursday to Saturday.

Ohio State vs. Texas
After Ohio State’s victory over Texas, a debate arises about the new No. 1 team in the nation. Alabama’s loss to Florida State adds to the rankings conversation. With three games still left in Week 1, let’s explore which teams might rise and fall in the updated rankings.

Projected Changes

  • Ohio State (OSU): The Buckeyes are anticipated to rise, possibly up to No. 2, after their victory, with competing opinions from fans and analysts about whether they or fellow Big Ten team, Penn State, will be leading in first-place votes.
  • Texas: Following their close loss, Texas is likely to drop from No. 1, but the voters may still place them in the top 10 due to the tough competition and circumstances of the match.
  • Alabama: The Crimson Tide will likely see a significant drop in the rankings, potentially slipping between No. 20 and No. 25 after their defeat against an unranked Florida State.
  • Florida State: After their impressive win, Florida State is expected to secure a spot in the Top 25, with potential placements ranging from mid-teens to the higher end of the ranking spectrum.
  • LSU and Clemson: With LSU’s major win against top-10 team Clemson, the narrative of Clemson being back has stumbled, putting them at a challenging junction in their season.

As the season progresses, major adjustments are expected, especially considering matchups ahead and voter perceptions.

CBS Sports will offer a complete projected AP Top 25 on Monday night after Week 1 matches conclude.
