Sorana Cîrstea Reports Theft of WTA Trophy During US Open 2025

Romanian tennis player Sorana Cîrstea shares her trophy was stolen from a hotel room in New York amidst the US Open.

Romanian tennis player Sorana Cîrstea reported that her trophy was stolen from her hotel room in New York during the 2025 US Open. Cîrstea clinched the trophy at the Tennis in the Land tournament, which served as her last event before the US Open, following her victory in the August 23 final.

After winning her first-round match in straight sets, Cîrstea was eliminated in the second round of the singles tournament by No. 11 seed Karolina Muchova. She and her doubles partner, Anna Kalinskaya, also faced defeat in the opening round against American players McCartney Kessler and Peyton Stearns.

“Whoever stole my Cleveland trophy from room 314 at The Fifty Sonesta, please give it back! It has no material value, just sentimental value. It would be greatly appreciated!”

The win in Cleveland marked Cîrstea’s third WTA singles title and her first since 2021. As a result, she climbed 41 spots to reach No. 71 in the WTA rankings.

The hotel manager, Simon Chapman, mentioned, “We are in close communication with our valued guest regarding the reported missing item. Our safety and security director, a retired NYPD detective, is overseeing the investigation personally. We treat this matter with utmost seriousness and are working directly with Ms. Cîrstea.”

Cîrstea’s exit in the second round of the US Open singles was her best performance in a Grand Slam event since her quarterfinal run at the same tournament in 2023.
