Marquez Valdes-Scantling Explains Decision to Join the 49ers Instead of Reuniting with Aaron Rodgers on the Steelers

Wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling offers insights into his choice to sign with the 49ers, prioritizing career growth over a reunion with his former Packers teammate, Aaron Rodgers.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling has acknowledged reports revealing his choices for a new team after being cut from the Seahawks. The 30-year-old wide receiver opted for the 49ers’ practice squad rather than the Steelers, where he could have reunited with former teammate Aaron Rodgers.

Valdes-Scantling clarified that his decision was purely business-oriented, saying, “Obviously, I have a good relationship with Aaron Rodgers over there, and he wanted me back over there. So, it was a toss-up, 50/50. I had to weigh my options and see which one I wanted to do, which was going to be better for my career at this point, and I was excited about it.”

He indicated that the 49ers’ offensive scheme and the current situation at receiver made his decision easier than rejoining Rodgers in Pittsburgh.

“The 49ers will start the season without their leading wideout, Brandon Aiyuk, due to an injury, offering Valdes-Scantling an opportunity to get on the active roster sooner rather than later,” he mentioned.

Valdes-Scantling also pointed out that not having to adapt to a completely new system was a significant factor in his choice. The 49ers’ offense resembles that of the Seahawks, making it easier for him to transition.
