Improvements to NFL Kickoff Rule for 2025 Amid Ongoing Challenges

The NFL's new kickoff rule has made initial gains for 2025, yet key adjustments are still necessary.

Improvements to NFL Kickoff Rule for 2025 Amid Ongoing Challenges

The NFL has executed significant updates to its kickoff rule for 2025, aiming for enhanced returns while addressing previous concerns. Following initial experiments, the league shifted the ball’s placement for touchbacks from the 30-yard line to the 35-yard line, aiming for a projected return rate of 65%-75%.

“I think the 35-yard line is pretty severe,” said Bill Cowher, an analyst on The NFL Today. “You get two first downs, then you’re kicking a field goal. I believe this placement could boost return rates as teams adjust their strategies.”

In contrast, onside kicks now can only be called when trailing, raising concerns about their reduced impact and element of surprise, as highlighted by Charles Davis.

“It’s gonna be hard… I just want the element of that back in, but I’m not sure how we can do it with this type of kickoff,” Davis remarked.

NFL analysts, including Nate Burleson, suggested a need for alternative plays for trailing teams to restore excitement around onside kicks, which have nearly disappeared from play.

Conclusion

While the NFL’s kickoff rule has undergone improvements with these new regulations, experts believe more adjustments are essential to enhance gameplay and maintain the dynamics of special teams.
