Lakers Honor Michael Cooper by Retiring His No. 21 Jersey

The Los Angeles Lakers celebrated Michael Cooper's historic contribution to the team by retiring his No. 21 jersey during an emotional halftime ceremony.

Michael Cooper dedicated his career to the Los Angeles Lakers, known for his defensive skills. On a memorable night, the Lakers celebrated him by retiring his jersey No. 21.

During a halftime ceremony at a game against the San Antonio Spurs, Cooper’s jersey was unveiled, permanently recognizing his contributions alongside greats like Magic Johnson and James Worthy.

Cooper stated, “This is so overwhelming to me, because I never expected this at all. I always played for the love of the game, and the team, and winning championships. Tonight is, to me, more special than the Hall of Fame — but both of them are equally important.”

Cooper remains beloved in Los Angeles, receiving cheers throughout the night, especially as fans honored him in light of recent wildfires affecting the community. His emotional address reflected on both personal and communal loss, saying, “It’s kind of a happy-sad moment for me, because many landmarks I grew up with are gone. Tonight I will enjoy it, but with a heavy heart because of what so many have lost.”

Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame last October, Cooper marks a significant milestone in Lakers history, and his number retirement signifies the respect and love he earned during his time with the team.
