Analysis of Potential Suspension for Luis Suarez Following Spitting Incident

Luis Suarez's spitting incident during the Leagues Cup final could lead to significant disciplinary actions and a possible suspension.

Inter Miami’s Luis Suarez could face a substantial suspension after spitting on a Seattle Sounders staff member during the Leagues Cup final on Sunday, where Miami lost 3-0. The match was chaotic, with Miami midfielder Sergio Busquets seemingly punching Seattle midfielder Obed Vargas. Since this incident occurred in the Leagues Cup, the disciplinary committee for the tournament will consider it for any disciplinary actions, but the situation may extend to MLS as well.

Suarez has a long history of suspensions, including racial abuse of Manchester United’s Patrice Evra in 2011, biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic in 2013, and a similar incident with Giorgio Chiellini at the 2014 World Cup, leading to a four-month ban from soccer. While this suspension might not be as severe, it’s possible it could conclude his MLS season.

Clint Dempsey faced a six-game suspension in a different tournament after confronting a referee, which was compounded by a three-game suspension in MLS. Similarly, former Real Salt Lake coach Mike Petke received a three-game suspension for misconduct toward referees, a precedent for the current situation.

In the league, Hector Herrera faced swift consequences for spitting at a referee in 2024 but did not receive an additional suspension due to timing. However, this does not guarantee Suarez will escape without similar repercussions.

What does the CBA allow?

Given the incident’s location in the Leagues Cup, the Collective Bargaining Agreement states it counts as discipline for on-field misconduct, covering acts occurring during any games or tournaments involving the player. The MLS Disciplinary Committee can impose penalties, and if the suspension exceeds two games, the MLS Players Association can appeal.

Considering the severity of the incident, it’s plausible that Suarez may not return for any of Miami’s remaining ten regular season games. The Herons won’t play again until September 13, allowing time for the situation to unfold as the league navigates the implications of the potential suspension.
