NEW ORLEANS – Saquon Barkley may not have had a remarkable outing in Super Bowl LIX, but he clinched the glory he desired most—the Super Bowl trophy.
Barkley tallied the season’s rushing yards and scrimmage yard records (including playoffs), but above all, he yearned for the coveted championship trophy. His first year with the Eagles turned out to be a fruitful one.
“It was a hell of a year, but all the numbers and stats or records are secondary to holding that Lombardi Trophy,” Barkley noted following the Eagles’ victory over the Chiefs by a score of 40-22.
In the Super Bowl, Barkley ended with 25 carries for 57 yards and recorded six receptions for 40 yards, a performance not typical of what Eagles fans saw from him all season. Regardless of his output on Super Sunday, he etched his name in NFL history.
He wrapped up the season with 2,504 rushing yards, marking the highest total for a single season (including playoffs). Also, he ended with 2,857 total yards from scrimmage, setting another record in league history. Furthermore, he and Davis are the sole athletes in NFL lore to have garnered 400+ rushing yards and 5+ rushing touchdowns in a single postseason.
This was Barkley’s purpose for joining the Eagles; he envisioned this moment.
“I came here to extend my legacy,” he expressed. “Injuries hindered me, but I never lost faith. Here we are now.”
Interestingly, the only item missing from his exploits this season was a touchdown on his birthday (February 9, the day the Eagles won the Super Bowl). However, he gladly accepted the Super Bowl title as a birthday gift.
“It looks even prettier in reality than it does in Madden,” Barkley remarked about the trophy. “It’s everything you dream of. I’m elated to finally hold it and enjoy the moment as a World Champ.”
