HARRISON, N.J. –
As the U.S. men’s national team holds a friendly against South Korea this week, anticipation looms for the upcoming World Cup. The match will serve as a reunion for Son Heung-Min, South Korea’s captain, and Mauricio Pochettino, now coaching the USMNT.
Son and Pochettino collaborated at Tottenham Hotspur from 2015 to 2019, where Son became a key player, scoring 75 goals.
“It’s not easy to see him and play against him,” Son remarked on Friday. “He made me the player the way I am now, so I have a lot of respect for him.”
Pochettino expressed admiration for Son, reflecting on how he had been a crucial player during their time together.
The upcoming friendly also serves the mutual benefits of both teams with the World Cup approaching. South Korea aims to adapt to the North American environments, scouting potential facilities for the World Cup.
“Timing is going to be a little different at the World Cup… we are preparing well,” Hong Myung-bo stated.
Much attention surrounds Son’s role in the match, transitioning as a forward after having mostly played as a midfielder throughout his career.
“I can do both positions well,” noted Son, showcasing confidence in his versatility.
As they navigate these preparations, the international spotlight is set on the impact players like Son will have in the MLS and a new era for the USMNT.
