USF shocked the No. 13 Florida Gators with an 18-16 upset victory at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, concluded by a 20-yard field goal from Nico Gramatica as time expired. Gramatica, a son of former NFL kicker Martin Gramatica, capped a 12-play drive that sent the Bulls into jubilation.
The significant offensive drive was bolstered by two major penalties from Florida: a pass interference on second-and-10 and an ejection of defensive lineman Brendan Bett for spitting on an opponent. With these errors, USF took advantage by draining the clock and setting up Gramatica’s decisive kick.
Earlier, USF almost had an opportunity for a field goal on a previous drive, but Gramatica’s 58-yard attempt fell short. He redeemed himself shortly after, securing the win with a game-winning kick.
The Gators had initially led 9-3 late in the first half, but USF responded with 12 unanswered points to pull ahead 15-9 late in the third quarter. DJ Lagway, Florida’s quarterback, briefly put his team back in the lead by finding Eugene Wilson III for a 9-yard touchdown with 12:29 left in the game. Despite Lagway finishing with 22 of 33 passes for 222 yards and one touchdown, the Gators’ offense faltered in the final moments.
Florida was favored by 18.5 points going into this matchup against the Bulls, who are now 2-0 this season with two statement victories. Their win provides them a strong potential bid for a Group of Six’s College Football Playoff spot and marks the first road win against a ranked team since beating Notre Dame in 2011.
