Injury Updates for 49ers' Kittle and Jennings, With Kendrick Bourne as a Possible Signing

The San Francisco 49ers face potential setbacks after injuries to key players in their opening game against the Seahawks.

The San Francisco 49ers managed to secure a 17-13 victory in their season opener against the Seattle Seahawks, but their triumph came at a cost as two key players were injured. Tight end George Kittle exited early due to a hamstring problem, while wide receiver Jauan Jennings suffered a shoulder injury later in the match. Initially, coach Kyle Shanahan provided no updates, but he confirmed both athletes will undergo MRIs.

Entering this game, Brock Purdy had uncertainty surrounding his offensive weapons. Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is not yet fit to play after an ACL tear last year, and while running back Christian McCaffrey managed to play through a calf injury, wide receiver Jordan Watkins was ruled out due to an ankle issue. Despite two missed field goals from Jake Moody, the 49ers found a way to win, capped off by a game-winning touchdown from backup tight end Jake Tonges.

Looking ahead, the 49ers might consider the addition of free agent wide receiver Kendrick Bourne, who was previously with the New England Patriots and was released last month. The 30-year-old started his NFL career in 2017 with the 49ers, making 137 catches for 1,769 yards and 11 touchdowns during his tenure.

“I know he hasn’t signed with one, so I know it’s a possibility we can get him,” Shanahan said. “I know we’re still trying. Hopefully that can work out.”

Next, the 49ers will travel to face the New Orleans Saints in Week 2.
