The Philadelphia Phillies on Monday placed two crucial infield players, Trea Turner (shortstop) and Alec Bohm (third baseman), on the injured list due to health issues.
The most critical situation is with Turner, who exited a game in Miami last Sunday due to a right hamstring strain. Manager Rob Thomson reported that it is a Grade 1 strain, but they anticipate his return in time for the playoffs. “It was better than we expected,” Thomson remarked.
Turner had been performing well, boasting a .305 batting average, 31 doubles, 7 triples, 15 home runs, 69 RBIs, and 36 stolen bases. His speed is essential for both offense and defense, making the hamstring injury especially concerning.
As he recovers, Edmundo Sosa is likely to assume shortstop duties.
On the other hand, Bohm is sidelined with left shoulder inflammation. This season, he has a batting average of .272, hitting 9 home runs in 111 games. While he normally would be replaced by Sosa, Wilson, who has limited experience at third base, might be considered during Turner’s absence. Thomson assured that they expect Bohm back in about ten days.
The injuries to Turner and Bohm come in the wake of losing ace Zack Wheeler for the rest of the season due to surgery to remove a blood clot from his shoulder.
Despite these challenges, the Phillies hold a significant seven-game lead in the NL East and maintain their No. 2 seed heading into the postseason. Still, these injuries pose a severe risk to their chances for a World Series title.
