Dan Campbell Calls Must-Win Game Against Bears

Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell emphasizes the importance of the upcoming game against the Chicago Bears, led by former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, calling it a crucial matchup.

The Detroit Lions are entering a new phase in 2025, following the departure of both offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. Both were regarded as top talents in the NFL, and their absence was felt during Week 1.

In a disappointing game, the Green Bay Packers defeated the Lions 27-13, ending Detroit’s 15-game streak of scoring 20 or more points. The offensive performance dropped to an average of just 3.8 yards per play, the lowest since 2021.

Next, the Lions face Johnson, who now manages the Chicago Bears. Campbell is determined not to start the season 0-2 at home, dubbing this contest against his former assistant as a must-win.

“Ben’s my friend. He’ll always be my friend. But that doesn’t matter right now,” said Campbell about the upcoming game against Johnson. “We need to focus on this game. We’re going to win this one. We have to.”
Translation: Ben es mi amigo. Siempre será mi amigo. Pero eso no importa en este momento. Necesitamos enfocarnos en este juego. Vamos a ganar este. Tenemos que hacerlo.

CBS Sports Research indicates that historically, only 25.1% of teams that start 0-1 make the playoffs, while falling to 0-2 significantly reduces those chances to just 12.2%.

The Bears also seek to bounce back after blowing a 17-6 lead against the Minnesota Vikings. Quarterback J.J. McCarthy found success in his debut, scoring three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, although Johnson made critical coaching mistakes that hindered their performance.

This marks the first time Campbell and Johnson will meet as opposing coaches after their successful coaching partnership in their previous seasons.
