Packers' Big Plays and Defense Propel Super Bowl Hopes

The Green Bay Packers showcase their potential as Super Bowl contenders with strong performances from Jordan Love and Micah Parsons.

Yes, it’s just Week 2, but the Green Bay Packers are appearing as genuine Super Bowl contenders this early in the 2025 season.

Critics might have attributed the Packers’ 27-13 Week 1 victory over the Detroit Lions, who had the No. 1 scoring offense last season (33.2 points per game), to the struggles of a team adjusting to new coordinators on both sides of the ball. However, back-to-back convincing wins over the Lions and a 27-18 victory against the 2024 NFC runner-up, the Washington Commanders, showcase their readiness.

Now, the Packers are executing their ideal game style: allow quarterback Jordan Love to build a substantial lead early and then let new star edge rusher Micah Parsons and the formidable pass rush capitalize against the opposing team. In Week 2, Love had a stellar performance, completing 12 of 17 passes for 200 yards and one touchdown, and finishing with 292 yards and two touchdowns on 19 of 31 passing. The Packers surged to a 14-0 lead, backed by impressive touchdown drives.

As TruMedia characterizes, explosive plays consist of completions over 15 yards or rushes of 12 yards and more. The Packers have amassed the highest number of such plays in the NFL with 15 in the first two weeks. Pro Bowl running back Josh Jacobs also achieved a rushing touchdown for the 10th consecutive game.

Thanks to this leading approach, Parsons and the defense can pressure opposing quarterbacks effectively. Following their matchup against Jayden Daniels, recognized as the 2024 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, the Packers’ pass rush was relentless, registering a total of four sacks across the Lions and Commanders games.

Parsons, while not having overwhelming sack stats in Week 2, recorded a commanding eight quarterback pressures, emphasizing the team’s speed and tenacity in limiting opponents’ yards after catch.

“It’s contagious. We’re getting after motherf—ers,” Parsons expressed regarding the team’s determination on Amazon Prime’s postgame show.

Despite the absence of formal rankings in the NFL, the Packers demonstrate their capability with these two victories against two teams that had successful previous seasons. Although a significant portion of the 2025 NFL season remains, the Packers are signaling their strength in the race for the coveted Vince Lombardi trophy.
