The Green Bay Packers secured a hard-fought 27-18 victory against the Washington Commanders, but it came at a significant cost as wide receiver Jayden Reed incurred a fractured collarbone, leading to his placement on injured reserve, according to head coach Matt LaFleur after the match. Although Reed is anticipated to be out for an extended period, the team hopes to see him return sometime during this season around a timeline of 6-8 weeks.
The injury occurred during the first quarter when Reed caught a 39-yard pass from Jordan Love, which was nullified due to a holding penalty against right tackle Anthony Belton, who was substituting for injured starter Zach Tom. Subsequently, safety Quan Martin landed heavily on Reed’s right shoulder while attempting to make the tackle.
After displaying signs of discomfort, Reed was initially questionable to return but was later confirmed out for the remainder of the game with the Packers leading at 14-3. Despite losing Reed, the Packers managed to drive forward, as Love connected with Romeo Doubs for a touchdown shortly after.
At 25, Reed is entering his third season with the Packers and has demonstrated impressive statistics in his previous seasons, accumulating 119 receptions for 1,650 yards and 14 touchdowns. He notably had three receptions for 45 yards and a touchdown in the Packers’ Week 1 success over the Detroit Lions.
The absence of Reed will affect a depth-filled Packers’ receiving lineup featuring Doubs, Dontayvion Wicks, as well as rookies Matthew Golden and Savion Williams. Tight ends Tucker Kraft and Luke Musgrave are also part of this dynamic group. In the wake of Reed’s injury, Kraft notably stepped up against the Commanders, achieving six catches for a personal best of 124 yards, including a touchdown.
