Ben Griffin Takes Commanding Lead at Procore Championship as Scheffler Struggles

In the Procore Championship, Ben Griffin showcases a remarkable performance with a three-shot advantage, while fellow Ryder Cup contestant Scottie Scheffler battles to stay relevant on the leaderboard.

NAPA, Calif. (AP) — Ben Griffin continued his strong performance at the Procore Championship, finishing with a bogey-free round for the second consecutive day and securing a three-shot lead with a score of 6-under 66.

Following him was Russell Henley, who is preparing for his Ryder Cup debut and registered a score of 68, despite experiencing some ups and downs. J.J. Spaun, the U.S. Open champion, trailed by five shots after shooting a 68.

“I wouldn’t even describe my mindset as Ryder Cup-focused. My priority has been this tournament,” Griffin remarked. He acknowledged that while the camaraderie with his Ryder Cup teammates had a presence off the course, his singular focus remained on performing well in this tournament.

Scottie Scheffler managed to improve from his opening round but still fell eight shots behind with a score of 68. Henley directly competed with Scheffler and Spaun and initially had a strong showing but faced challenges on several holes, including a three-putt bogey.

Griffin demonstrated exceptional skill, particularly over the back nine, where he strategically approached par 5s, showcasing his capabilities in challenging wind conditions.

There were additional narratives unfolding as amateur golfer Jackson Koivun, who recently excelled at the Walker Cup, aimed to close the gap on Griffin. As all the while, the pressure of the impending 36-hole cut loomed over the players who had not faced such stakes since the British Open.
