Veteran College Football Referee Resigns After Replay Controversy in UConn-Syracuse Match

Gary Patterson leaves his position after over two decades as an ACC official due to handling of a replay incident.

Gary Patterson, a long-standing official in the ACC, has stepped back from his role after over 20 years, prompted by frustration related to a replay incident in a recent game between Syracuse and UConn. As reported by ESPN, the conflict stemmed from a communication issue between the officiating team and the ACC’s replay command center.

During the game, a UConn player hit Syracuse quarterback Steve Angeli during a throw, leading the officials to initially rule the pass incomplete. The situation worsened when Patterson had difficulty coordinating the review of this play, and again, confusion arose when the review was delayed beyond the next snap.

As a result, the ACC confirmed that Patterson is no longer part of their officiating roster and has since made arrangements to fill his position. Patterson, who commenced his officiating career with the ACC in 2002, was designated to lead the crew in an upcoming match-up between Pittsburgh and West Virginia.

The incident unfolded while Syracuse was trailing 14-3 and, ultimately, they managed to turn the game around, winning in overtime. Angeli finished the game with a career-high 417 passing yards.
