Mikel Arteta may claim otherwise, but he appears impacted by the criticism regarding Arsenal’s 1-0 loss against Liverpool before the international break. When given a chance to talk about Mikel Merino, the hat-trick scorer in Spain’s route over Turkey during the World Cup qualifiers, Arteta instead reflected on the prior match.
“I heard some comments about how we played with three midfielders [at Anfield], defensive midfielders I think was the narrative,” Arteta stated. “Mikel [Merino] has to play in an attacking midfielder. I don’t know when was the last attacking midfielder to score three goals. So it’s very interesting to learn what perception is, especially when you lose a football match.”
Arsenal’s defeat marked their first of the season, with Szoboszlai’s late free kick securing victory for Liverpool. Arteta’s strategy, particularly his choice of starting Merino over debuting Eberechi Eze or risking Martin Odegaard’s fitness, faced scrutiny.
Despite missing key players like Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, and Ben White, Arsenal dominated shots taken but could not translate performance into a win. Although they limited Liverpool to only 16 penalty box touches compared to their own 29, the latter’s solitary goal proved decisive.
Arteta’s remarks showed that he was aware of the criticism about the midfield strategy but maintained that the actual match review offered a different perspective. He noted:
“At the end, the opinion is going to be different if you win or lose. You have to accept that.”
This upcoming match against Nottingham Forest might bring a different vibe as Arsenal seeks redemption.
