Texas A&M Rises to Top 10; Alabama Gains Ground While Clemson Stumbles

An update on the latest AP Top 25 rankings following the third week of college football action in the 2025 season.

Several teams highly regarded in the AP Top 25 poll faced losses on Saturday, but how many will retain their spots in the rankings when they are updated on Sunday?

AP voters had a more favorable view of Clemson compared to the Coaches Poll, placing the Tigers at No. 4 in the preseason but dropping them following a loss to LSU. A difficult start to the season was compounded by struggles against Troy and Georgia Tech, leading to questions about their future in the top 25.

Clemson isn’t alone, as South Carolina and Notre Dame also faced defeats that will challenge their standings. Despite numerous teams in the top 25 performing well, only a few spots might shift significantly based on their performances.

The new AP Top 25 predictions consider various factors:

  1. Ohio State (Previous - 1): Maintains the top position with an impressive 57 first-place votes after defeating Ohio 37-9.
  2. Penn State (2): Secured a win against Villanova and will have a break before facing Oregon on September 27.
  3. LSU (3): Continued to impress despite not playing their best game, winning against Florida 20-10.
  4. Oregon (4): Dominated Northwestern, scoring on five of their first six possessions.
  5. Georgia (6): Climbed back into the top ranks with a win over Tennessee in overtime.
  6. Miami (5): Despite a strong 49-12 win against USF, they may not rise due to others’ gains.
  7. Texas (7): A solid win against UTEP did not significantly alter perceptions.
  8. Illinois (9): Prepares for a significant match against Indiana.
  9. Florida State (10): Seeking redemption next week after a bye.
  10. Texas A&M (16): Encroaches on the top 10 after a thrilling victory over Notre Dame.
  11. Oklahoma (13): A steady win over Temple with noted defensive strengths.
  12. Iowa State (14): Planned a well-deserved bye week after a tough early schedule.
  13. Ole Miss (17): Gained momentum against tough SEC opposition.
  14. Alabama (19): Shined with a strong victory over Wisconsin, regaining form after early setbacks.
  15. Tennessee (15): Maintained their spot despite overtime losses.
  16. Utah (20): Handled Wyoming efficiently.
  17. Texas Tech (21): Overcame weather delays for a commanding win.
  18. Indiana (22): Stood out with a massive 73-0 victory.
  19. Georgia Tech (NR): Made headlines with a win over Clemson, potentially earning a ranking spot.
  20. Michigan (23): Established dominance with a decisive victory despite sideline absences.
  21. Auburn (24): Scraped through against South Alabama for a stable win.
  22. Missouri (25): Triumphed over Louisiana decisively.
  23. Vanderbilt (NR): Secured two wins against power conference hopefuls.
  24. Notre Dame (8): Now struggling in the rankings post-loss to Texas A&M.
  25. USF (18): May hold onto their spot in the rankings despite early season inconsistencies.

Projected drops: South Carolina (11), Clemson (12).
