LaNorris Sellers Injured: South Carolina Quarterback Out Against Vanderbilt
LaNorris Sellers from the South Carolina Gamecocks suffered an injury during the game against Vanderbilt and won't return after a significant hit.
South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers had to leave Saturday’s matchup against Vanderbilt late in the second quarter, as he received a hard hit on a blitz from linebacker Langston Patterson. After review, targeting was called against Patterson, resulting in his ejection following Sellers’s entry into the injury tent.
Trainers assessed Sellers near the bench with his helmet removed, but there has been no update from officials regarding the injury’s severity. Sellers was hit around the chin and side of his head and crashed face-first into the ground. The SEC Network broadcast later showed him walking towards the locker room without his helmet.
“LaNorris Sellers had to be helped off the field after this hit. The defender was called for targeting and ejected from the game.”
On the next play, backup quarterback Luke Doty managed to connect with Nyck Harbor for a reception, but the play was halted to review the previous hit on Sellers. Wildly displeased, Coach Shane Beamer expressed frustration over the delays in reviewing the hit and suggested they were stifling the Gamecocks’ offensive flow.
“I asked the official as soon as it happened if they were reviewing for targeting,” Beamer remarked during halftime. “When your quarterback is down on the ground, he likely took a hit to the head. For some reason, the review took longer than expected. I have no idea what goes on in Birmingham [SEC headquarters], but that was pretty evident.”
Trailing 14-7 at halftime, Beamer informed SEC Network’s Cole Cubelic that Sellers’s return was uncertain. “We don’t have an update right now,” he stated. “We’ll go in here now and assess the situation.”
Upon returning for the second half, Cubelic announced to viewers that Sellers would not be returning to the game for the remainder of the match.
