Dan Marino Discloses His Liver Disease Diagnosis: 'It Can Be Reversible'

The legendary Dolphins quarterback shares his health journey since being diagnosed with liver disease in 2007.

Former quarterback for the Miami Dolphins, Dan Marino, shared that he was diagnosed with liver disease, specifically metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), during a routine check-up in 2007. Initially feeling fatigued but showing no other symptoms, Marino, now 64, noted that the doctors informed him that the condition might be reversible, advising him to lose weight and work out.

Marino has since improved his diet and integrated regular exercise, guided by his doctors to adopt a Mediterranean diet and limit indulgences like wine and sweets. He often trains with his former teammate Terry Kirby at Kirby’s gym, goes on walks, and enjoys bike rides with his wife, Claire.

Upon his retirement, Marino held multiple records for career completions, yards, and touchdowns, which have since been surpassed. He was a nine-time Pro Bowler and the first quarterback to pass for over 5,000 yards in a single season, winning the NFL MVP in 1984.
