U.S. Women’s National Team talent and Racing Louisville star Savannah DeMelo collapsed on the field during an NWSL match against Seattle Reign on Sunday night.
The California native appeared distressed before falling backwards on the pitch. According to her club, she was stable and alert by 9:37 p.m. ET and was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.
At the time of the incident, DeMelo was with two teammates and medical staff, who quickly called for an ambulance. Her teammates left the field visibly emotional as they looked back at the situation.

The incident marked DeMelo’s second medical episode of the season; she previously collapsed during a match against Bay FC on March 22, experiencing dizziness and shortness of breath, and was carried off the field on a stretcher.
The NWSL Players Association issued a statement expressing their concern for DeMelo’s health, emphasizing that her well-being is their top priority. They stated, “Postponing the match was the appropriate decision, as player safety is paramount.”
Note: While the cause of this specific episode is unknown, DeMelo, 27, was diagnosed with Graves’ disease and hyperthyroidism the previous fall. In an interview with ESPN, she shared her struggle during matches, expressing, “Playing a 90-minute game felt unbearable. I would get to maybe the 25th minute, and I felt like my heart was just beating so fast, out of my chest. I didn’t know what was happening.”
The rest of the match will be rescheduled for a later date, according to Racing Louisville.
