Throwback Fever in the NFL
Throwbacks are very much in vogue within the NFL sphere, as fans clamor for nostalgia surrounding their beloved teams. In a unique celebration, CBS plans a throwback weekend that promises to deliver a rich tapestry of 1975-themed content. During Week 3 of the NFL season, which begins on Sunday, September 21, significant homage will be offered to “The NFL Today,” a pioneering pregame show that elevated CBS’s NFL broadcasting profile.
A vintage episode of “The NFL Today” will air at noon ET featuring special guests, nostalgic visuals, and innovative technology that will recreate the original 1975 set. Original host Brent Musburger will reunite with current host James Brown, joined by analysts Bill Cowher, Nate Burleson, and Matt Ryan, who will discuss highlights from the previous week, while also reflecting on this half-century legacy.
Coinciding with this, several NFL teams will embrace throwback uniforms during the games, including the New England Patriots, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Notably, the modern iteration of “The NFL Today” revolutionized sports broadcasting by presenting live studio coverage before any game, marking a pivotal moment in CBS Sports history.
Teams That Did Not Exist in 1975
- Baltimore Ravens (previously Cleveland Browns)
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers (inaugural season 1976)
- Seattle Seahawks (inaugural season 1976)
- Carolina Panthers (inaugural season 1995)
- Jacksonville Jaguars (inaugural season 1995)
- Houston Texans (inaugural season 2002)
The 1975 NFL landscape consisted of 26 franchises, boasting three divisions within each conference, and only eight teams reached the playoffs—the stakes were high. Only time will tell how this nostalgic look will influence the current NFL landscape.
