Breanna Stewart Injury Update
The star of the New York Liberty, Breanna Stewart, will be a game-time decision for Game 2 in the first-round playoff series against the Phoenix Mercury. Head coach Sandy Brondello stated that Stewart left Game 1, which the Liberty won dramatically, due to a left knee injury with just two minutes remaining in overtime.
Brondello provided a reassuring update after Tuesday’s practice, mentioning that the imaging results came back “relatively clean”. Stewart did not participate in practice and the team will assess how she feels before deciding on her availability for the game.
During Game 1’s overtime, Stewart impressively drove through contact for a crucial basket that increased the Liberty’s lead to five, but immediately exhibited pain and clutched her knee.
Despite this setback, Stewart managed to leave the court without assistance and had a solid performance overall with 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. It’s critical for the Liberty to have her in top form as they aim to sweep the Mercury and reach the semifinals, potentially facing the top-seeded Minnesota Lynx next.
This season has been particularly challenging for Stewart and the Liberty, given their struggles with injuries, including her prior surgery on the right knee, which sidelined her temporarily earlier this year.
