“We lost. It’s disappointing. I feel we let that one slip through our fingers with our poor defense at the end,” remarked Las Vegas head coach Becky Hammon following the game. The Aces’ streak was just one victory shy of the WNBA record for consecutive wins, which is held by the Los Angeles Sparks, who won 18 games in a row back in 2001.
Despite a strong start in Game 1 with a 102-77 win, the Aces succumbed to a fierce Storm defense that limited star player A’ja Wilson to just one basket in the final quarter. Seattle remarkably outscored Las Vegas 23-8 in the last seven minutes of the game.
Skylar Diggins and Nneka Ogwumike exhibited veteran leadership by scoring a combined 50 points, while rookie Dominique Malonga impressed against a formidable opponent. “Our goal was to show that we were not intimidated. We respect their talent, but we also came ready to compete,” Diggins commented postgame.
The Aces turn a challenging past season into an incredible turnaround, securing the No. 2 seed for the playoffs after recovering from a 53-point defeat to the Minnesota Lynx on August 2. Conversely, the Storm showed resilience amidst their struggles, demonstrating their experience in tight matchups.
