Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray offered an apology following an outcry over a social media post. In a now-deleted Instagram photo, he was pictured with his pit bull while wearing a throwback Michael Vick jersey from Virginia Tech.
In 2007, Vick entered a plea deal after being charged with managing and participating in a dogfighting ring and served 21 months in federal prison.
Upon reflecting on the post, which showed Murray with one of his dogs, he expressed strong disapproval of animal cruelty, mentioning that he deleted the photo after realizing its impact.
“In no way, shape or form do I condone animal cruelty or dogfighting or whatever it is,” Murray stated. “My dogs, Trunks and Swoosh, they both get treated like kings.”
Michael Vick, who played as the star quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons from 2001-06, was suspended from the NFL in August 2007 and served almost two years in prison for his involvement in the dogfighting operation, where he acknowledged participating in killing some dogs.
Following his release, Vick was reinstated in 2009 and played five additional seasons in the NFL, including for the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Jets, and Pittsburgh Steelers. Now, at 45 years old, Vick is the head coach at Norfolk State University near his hometown of Newport News, Virginia.
