Throughout the season, the CBS Sports MLB experts hold weekly discussions about various topics.
Which team has the best chance to beat out the Mets for the third wild card spot?
R.J. Anderson: On paper, the clear favorite is the Giants. They possess the lightest remaining schedule among the NL wild card contenders. Conversely, the Reds and the Diamondbacks face two of the most challenging schedules left in the majors. While strength of schedule isn’t the only factor determining performance, it does provide a sense of confidence.
Dayn Perry: I lean towards the Reds since they have the head-to-head tiebreaker against the Mets. Their current schedule allows them to avoid facing Paul Skenes in their series against the Pirates.
Mike Axisa: I have reservations about the three-wild card system as it expands the postseason too much. However, this season’s NL races would be dull without it. I predict the Mets secure that third wild card, though the Reds might have the best chance to catch them.
Matt Snyder: I believe the Mets will clinch the spot despite their rough patches this season. The Giants have a more manageable schedule than expected, which could aid their pursuit.
