Maryland's Derik Queen Crowned Freshman of the Week in College Basketball
Derik Queen's remarkable performance leads to him being named Freshman of the Week as he showcases impressive statistics.
Maryland star big man Derik Queen made history last weekend by posting 29 points, 15 rebounds, and 5 assists in a single game — a feat not accomplished by a first-year player in college basketball for at least two decades.
Queen has been a pivotal contributor to Maryland’s successful season, leading the team as they entered the AP Top 25 poll for the first time in nearly two years. Despite a mid-week setback against Ohio State, Queen’s efforts helped secure a victory over Rutgers, where he outperformed the opposing dynamic freshman duo of Ace Bailey and Dylan Harper, scoring 29 points compared to their combined 24.
“But obviously, we’re all in a race for freshman of the year,” Queen stated post-game. “On the court, it’s competitive, and I just wanted to set myself apart to show them that I want the freshman of the year.”
In the latest mock draft by CBS Sports, Queen is projected to go No. 23 overall, with possibilities of climbing into the lottery positions by the season’s end.
