The Afghan women’s refugee team is set to compete in its inaugural international tournament this October amidst the FIFA Unites: Women’s Soccer event in Dubai, UAE, beginning on October 23. This competition will bring together the Afghan refugee team along with national teams from Chad, Libya, and the UAE.
“Ensuring that all women have access to football is a priority for FIFA and a key element in shaping the future of our sport,” stated FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
Translation: “Ensuring that all women have access to football is a priority for FIFA and a key element in shaping the future of our sport.”
The newly established Afghan women’s refugee team was formed following the Taliban’s restrictions on women’s sports after their takeover in 2021. While the squad cannot yet officially represent Afghanistan in World Cup qualifying events, their participation signifies hope and progress.
In an effort to support women’s football within the country, FIFA has implemented a detailed strategy called “Action for Afghan Women’s Football”. This includes humanitarian aid aimed at ensuring the well-being of women in Afghanistan, while also focusing on the empowerment of the newly formed refugee team.
The upcoming matches promise to be streamed live on FIFA’s platform, showcasing these pioneering athletes to a global audience.
