On Tuesday night, Tarik Skubal, a left-hander for the Detroit Tigers, paid a visit to David Fry, the designated hitter for the Cleveland Guardians, in the hospital. This visit occurred just hours after Fry suffered facial and nasal fractures from a failed bunt attempt against Skubal’s 99-mph fastball.
Skubal was escorted to the hospital and the Tigers’ team hotel by Guardians manager Stephen Vogt, who shared updates about Fry’s condition leading into Wednesday’s game against the Tigers. “He’s injured. He’s hurting. He’s in a ton of pain,” Vogt remarked, adding, “But as far as life goes, he’s gonna be OK. Anytime with a head injury, you worry about the long-term effects, but he’s been cleared of any brain-related issues. That’s what really counts. Broken bones can heal.”

Fry was placed on the injured list the following day, concluding his season. Outfielder Johnathan Rodriguez was elevated to the active roster to fill his vacancy.
The Guardians announced, “David Fry sustained multiple, minimally displaced fractures on the left side of his face and nose,” and confirmed he would not require surgery, with expectations of a complete recovery in six to eight weeks.
Prior to the injury, Fry had participated in 66 games this season, with a batting line of .171/.229/.363, substantially below his previous year’s stats of .263/.356/.448.
