A’ja Wilson Supports Napheesa Collier: Expresses Disgust at Cathy Engelbert's Comments

A’ja Wilson stands by her teammate Napheesa Collier following controversial remarks made by WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert.

WNBA leadership received criticism when Minnesota Lynx guard Napheesa Collier made significant comments during her exit interview on Tuesday. One of the strongest responses came from A’ja Wilson, a four-time WNBA MVP, shortly after the Las Vegas Aces secured their spot in the WNBA Finals.

Wilson had been busy preparing for a playoff game against the Indiana Fever and downplayed her reaction earlier, but after Las Vegas won 107-98, she took time to reflect on Collier’s statements.

“I was honestly disgusted by the comments that Cathy (Engelbert) made,” said Wilson in her postgame press conference.
Translation: “I felt let down by what Cathy said.”

Wilson continued, “But at the same time, I’m very appreciative that we have people like Phee in our committee of players’ association representing us. We need to continue to champion our beliefs.”

Collier voiced multiple concerns in her statement, including comments made by Engelbert suggesting that players like Caitlin Clark should be thankful for the platform the WNBA provides. She said Engelbert implied that players should be “on their knees thanking their lucky stars” for the media rights deal secured for the league.

Many voices from the WNBA community, including Fever coach Stephanie White and players like Erica Wheeler and Angel Reese, backed Collier’s remarks.
